Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory (2003) has an unusual origin — it began as the multiplayer component of a planned expansion to Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and when the single-player portion was cancelled, developer Splash Damage and id Software released the multiplayer for free. That decision turned it into one of the most generous and enduring free shooters ever, a class-based, objective-driven World War II team game that thrived for years on dedicated communities.

The heart of it was teamwork across five classes — Soldier, Medic, Engineer, Field Ops and Covert Ops — each essential to completing map objectives like blowing open bases, escorting tanks or transmitting stolen documents. A persistent experience system let you improve your character over a campaign of maps, rewarding sustained play. Maps like Fuel Dump and Rail Gun became classics, and the emphasis on coordinated pushes over pure fragging gave it real tactical depth.

Enemy Territory built a fiercely loyal following, with a competitive scene and a modding community that kept it alive well beyond its years. Being free certainly helped, but it endured because the class interplay and objective design were genuinely excellent.
