About the game

Year 1992, the monitor's humming, the manual is thick as a phone book, and I know that if I don't read it, I'll be lost within an hour. SpellCraft: Aspects of Valor by Asciiware was exactly the type of game that punished laziness and rewarded patience.

It's a turn-based strategy with a magical setting, where you play as a wizard trying to defend or control a fantasy world. The game blends classic strategic planning with adventure elements and a touch of RPG — you build your power base, cast spells, and wage battles. It's neither pure wargame nor classic RPG, sitting somewhere in between, with the strategic side clearly pulling the whole wagon. There was also a SNES port that was supposedly more adventure-focused and less strategy-heavy — two games with the same name for two different types of players, which wasn't unusual back in 1992.

Gameplay hinges on resource management, spellcasting, and tactical decision-making. The manual isn't just decoration — without it, you'll easily get lost in systems the game refuses to explain for you. But whoever worked through it got solid story context and understood why the game works the way it does. Controls are typical early '90s PC: menu after menu, nothing intuitive, but once you get used to it, you navigate automatically. Pacing is slow and thoughtful — no action-packed split-second decisions.

SpellCraft isn't a title that fundamentally changed the genre or wrote itself into the history books in gold letters. It's a solid, slightly forgotten game that back then appealed to players hungry for strategy with a magical touch and willing to invest time in learning. It aged predictably — the graphics are functional, not enchanting, and the user interface looks like a decent patchwork from an era when no one babied the player. This isn't a complaint, it's just fact.

Today, anyone who loves strategy from the first half of the nineties and doesn't mind a game that requires investment before it becomes fun will give it a shot. If you're looking for quick gratification, SpellCraft isn't for you. If you enjoy archaeologically exploring what all was being tried on PC in 1992 — this is a decent specimen. Download the manual along with the game. This time it won't let you down.
