About the game

Year 1992, middle of the night, parents asleep, and I've got something on a floppy disk that a friend brought from school with a conspiratorial whisper: "You can't run this if someone's home." Spellcasting 301 wasn't a game you'd admit to your computer science teacher.

It's the conclusion of a trilogy by Legend Entertainment, a text adventure with graphics where you play as Ernie Eaglebeak — a magic student with chronic bad luck and an excess of hormones. Spring Break, as the name suggests, takes place during spring break at a magical academy, and Ernie faces another series of problems, spells, and situations that wouldn't happen in any other game by accident. Legend had built a reputation back then by releasing adventures where humor and adult content went hand in hand — and this game is the purest expression of that.

The foundation is a classic text adventure with graphical accompaniment. You type commands, explore locations, collect items, and solve puzzles. Legend had a sophisticated parser at the time that understood more than "take sword" — you could actually communicate with it, try things, ask about objects. The puzzles aren't trivial, the game doesn't hold your hand, and the inventory can tangle your brain pretty well. Anyone expecting just a collection of sheepish scenes was surprised that there's real gameplay here. The humor works — it's dry, sometimes absurd, and doesn't rely on beating a single punchline to death.

What aged well: Bob Bates' written humor holds up surprisingly strongly, the logic of the world has internal consistency, and the game takes itself seriously in a way that isn't ashamed of its own genre. What aged worse: without a manual or period-appropriate patience, you can easily get stuck today because the parser sometimes refuses to understand the right phrasing and you'll spend ten minutes trying synonyms. The graphics were functional in 1992, today they're more of a historical document than an experience.

Today this game will appeal to people who have a relationship with text adventures like reading — they enjoy the story, enjoy typing commands, and aren't afraid that the game isn't immediately accommodating. Ernie Eaglebeak isn't a hero you'd want to brag about, but as a guide through the absurd world of a magical school in the nineties, he works reliably. And if you enjoy finding out what all the parser can accept — Legend will reward you more than you expect.
