About the game

I was fourteen and playing until two in the morning. My parents were asleep, the speakers turned down to minimum, and I'd just led Spartak to the Champions League final with players the size of beans. Sensible World of Soccer. I couldn't pronounce the name properly, but I could play it brilliantly.

Sensible Software released SWOS in 1994 for Amiga, and the PC version arrived in 1995. It's a football manager game with a direct action component — a combination that wasn't obvious back then. You could choose from hundreds of teams worldwide, league competitions, cups, national teams. The player database was absurdly comprehensive for its time. Fictional names, but stats based on real rosters. Anyone who played it knows how long you could spend just browsing team lists, checking if real players were in there.

Matches play out from a bird's-eye view, the player sprites are tiny, movement is fast and surprisingly precise. You'll master the controls in five minutes — one main button for shooting and passing, direction controlled by movement. But mastering it really well? That took much longer. Curved shots, precise crosses, moving the ball across the field in one touch — it all worked if you figured it out. And that apparent simplicity hiding real depth was exactly why you couldn't put it down.

The management side wasn't just window dressing. Before a match you'd set tactics, formation, player instructions. After each season came transfers, contracts, injuries. Today's modern manager game player might call it primitive, but in 1995 it had exactly as much depth as you wanted to use. Nobody gave you a tutorial. Either you figured it out, or you lost.

What aged well: the pace, playability, and the feeling of scoring. That sequence — player falls, commentator screams GOAL, and you see the replay — still works like a little dopamine hit. What aged less well: the interface is unintuitive in places and without a manual you can get lost in the management menus. The graphics are deliberately stylized, which is fine, but some screens look like one person made them in an afternoon. Probably did.

Today SWOS suits anyone who wants football without the baggage of dozens of menus, licenses, and thirty-second celebration animations. It works brilliantly in two-player on one keyboard, which was the whole point anyway. Runs flawlessly in a browser emulator with zero entry barrier. Play it. Or at least try one match — then you'll understand why I didn't sleep back then.
