About the game

Isle of the Dead is a 1993 release published by Merit Software that tried to fuse a first-person shooter with adventure-game elements, wrapped in a deliberately schlocky B-movie horror atmosphere. Stranded on a jungle island, the player contends with the undead and other horrors while the game leans heavily on digitised imagery to sell its low-budget grindhouse tone.

It arrived in the wake of Wolfenstein 3D, when many studios were experimenting with the newly popular first-person perspective, and its blend of shooting, item-based puzzles and campy presentation made it an oddity rather than a polished success. I know it chiefly as one of those ambitious, rough-edged genre hybrids of the early 90s, and would interest players curious about the FPS form's stranger early offshoots.
