About the game

ReadySoft. That name meant one thing in 1992: animation like it came straight out of Disney studios and gameplay that killed you before you understood what was happening. Dragon's Lair, Space Ace — arcade legends that posed as interactive movies on PC. Guy Spy and the Crystals of Armageddon is their lesser-known cousin. Lesser-known, but not necessarily worse.

The game builds on the same principle as its predecessors from Don Bluth's workshop — smooth drawn animation, spy-thriller setting in the style of a B-movie Bond flick, and somewhere in the middle of it all, you, mashing arrow keys at the right moment. Guy Spy is an agent with both a beard and a sense of humor, his mission roughly amounts to saving the world from the titular crystals of doom. The plot mainly serves as an excuse for chase sequences, fights, and falling from just about everything.

The mechanics are pure LaserDisc style: you watch the animation, and at the critical moment the game gives you a fraction of a second to hit the right key. Miss it, you die. And you die beautifully — ReadySoft mastered death animations better than many studios mastered anything else. Get it right, and the animation continues. That's the whole game. Anyone hearing this for the first time shrugs. Anyone who saw this as a kid on a VGA monitor knows why it worked back then: nowhere else would you see such smooth drawn graphics.

How has it aged? Depends on what you're expecting. As a gaming challenge, it's still frustrating and limitedly fun — trial and error with zero depth. As a technical showcase from 1992, it's still impressive. The animation has punch, the timing of cuts keeps the pace, and Guy Spy has at least a bit more room for action than stoic Dirk the Daring. ReadySoft packed more humor and variety into this than you'd expect. On the other hand, anyone coming back for playability will be disappointed roughly the same way I was when I finally unwrapped Dragon's Lair back then.

Today Guy Spy appeals to people who want to taste the era when "interactive movie" was meant completely literally and nobody considered it a marketing scam. In a browser via DOSBox Online, this is the ideal half-hour experience — long enough that you understand why we thought this was a miracle in the nineties, short enough that repeated dying doesn't bore you. Retro gaming purists will try it once. The nostalgic will fire it up again.
