About the game

Year 1983, ZX Spectrum, four kilobytes of RAM, and a game that stole your weekend. Kevin Toms released the first Football Manager back then and launched a series with more addictive power than anything else coming out of a cassette tape at the time. Football Manager 3 came out in 1993 — exactly ten years after the original — and was the last installment under the Addictive Games banner.

It's football management in its purest form. You run a club, buy and sell players, tweak tactics, and watch match results play out in text or simple graphics. No overreaching ambitions, no big-budget animated graphics. Just numbers, tables, and that constant drive to climb one league higher.

Gameplay builds on the well-tested foundation of its predecessors. The DOS interface is stripped-down — menus, submenus, text windows, minimal unnecessary clicking. Player transfers, team setup, form tracking, finances. None of it will surprise you, but everything works as it should. The problem is that compared to the competition available at the time — Championship Manager from Domark came out in the same period — FM3 doesn't keep pace in management depth. You can feel the series aging. Not badly, but noticeably.

What I remember most is exactly that feeling Kevin Toms built into the DNA of the entire series: one more round. One more match, one more transfer, one more shot at promotion. FM3 has it, even if a notch weaker than the older Spectrum or Commodore entries, where graphic simplicity paradoxically had greater charm. On DOS, this restraint looks more like neutral gray than deliberate elegance.

Today FM3 will appeal mainly to those wanting to understand where management games came from. It's not the best representative of the genre from 1993, but it's honest proof of what the foundations looked like before Championship Manager and then FM from Sports Interactive turned the whole genre upside down. If you were a fan of Addictive back then and this style of spartan management, nostalgia is guaranteed. If you're coming in fresh — start with the first one instead. That's where it all began, and the simplicity makes more sense there.
