FIFA Soccer 96 marked a real turning point for EA's football juggernaut. It was the first entry in the series to move to a polygonal engine, replacing the flat sprite players of the earlier isometric games with EA's "Virtual Stadium" technology and genuinely 3D athletes on the pitch. Combined with a fresh, more dynamic camera angle, it made the on-screen action feel closer to a televised match than anything the franchise had managed before, and it set the visual template the series would refine for years afterwards.

Under the hood it kept the accessible, pick-up-and-play feel EA had already established, with big licensed league and player databases, commentary, and the arcade-leaning pace that separated FIFA from the more purist simulations of the day. The 3D players were a little stiff and gangly by modern standards, and the passing could feel loose, but at the time the leap in presentation was genuinely impressive and helped cement FIFA as the mainstream football brand.

Played now, FIFA 96 is very much a transitional game. It's a fascinating snapshot of the exact moment sports titles crossed over into the polygon era, and there's nostalgic pleasure in its blocky players and rousing intro, but the gameplay has been comprehensively surpassed by later entries. It's best appreciated as a historical milestone, the first recognisably modern-looking FIFA, rather than as a game you'd sit down to play seriously today.
