About the game

Two factions, no subscription fee, and character models that looked like someone squeezed a G.I. Joe figure until its head doubled in size. That was Battlefield Heroes in 2009 — EA's attempt to chase the free-to-play wave before the industry fully understood what free-to-play actually meant.

The setup was simple enough. Nationals versus Royals, a cartoonish take on World War II where nobody was meant to feel guilty about anything. Third-person shooter, class-based teams, capture-and-hold maps lifted straight from the Battlefield DNA. The tone was somewhere between an animated Saturday morning show and a propaganda poster drawn by someone who found the whole war business rather funny. No campaign, no story worth mentioning — just multiplayer, all day, every day.

Three classes covered the basics: a soldier who shot things, a commando who shot things quietly, and a gunner who absorbed bullets while shooting things loudly. The shooting itself felt loose in a way that was partly intentional and partly just how browser-adjacent games played in that era. Abilities were on cooldowns, experience trickled in after matches, and your character slowly grew stronger. It worked well enough to keep you in for another round. The problem arrived when EA discovered that "free-to-play" could mean "free until you want to compete seriously," and cosmetic items started bleeding into actual stats. That particular design decision aged about as well as you'd expect.

What Battlefield Heroes actually got right was the atmosphere. The maps had personality. The sound effects were punchy and slightly ridiculous. Running around in an oversized helmet while a ragtime-adjacent soundtrack played in the background had a specific charm that most shooters of the period weren't even attempting. It wasn't trying to be Call of Duty. For a while, that restraint felt refreshing. EA shut the servers down in 2015, and honestly, the pay-to-win creep that set in over those six years probably made the goodbye easier than it should have been.

Today Battlefield Heroes exists in private server revivals kept alive by people who remember it more fondly than its final months deserved. If you find one running, it's worth an hour for the novelty — the visual style still holds up better than most of its contemporaries, and there's something genuinely pleasant about a WWII shooter that doesn't take itself seriously for even a single second. Just don't expect balance. The original developers stopped caring about that long before the lights went out.
