About the game

The motion tracker bleeps. Something moves in the vent above you. You spin around, aim at the ceiling, and shoot at nothing. Then it drops behind you. Alien Trilogy does not give you a moment to feel clever.

Alien Trilogy – screenshot 1

Released in 1996 by Probe Software, this first-person shooter works its way through all three films in the original Alien series — colonial marine corridors, the prison hellhole of Fiorina 161, and the industrial nightmare of the Sulaco. It is not a faithful retelling of any of them. It is a shooting gallery built from their scenery, and it knows exactly what it is. Each chapter pulls its visual language straight from the films: the flickering fluorescents, the dripping walls, the chest-high fog that hides what is coming at your ankles.

The mechanics are what you would expect from a mid-nineties Doom-era shooter, with one important difference — the enemies do not line up politely. Aliens flank, drop from above, and swarm in numbers that punish any instinct to stand still and aim carefully. Facehuggers skitter across the floor like thrown spiders. Eggs sit in corners looking harmless until they do not. The motion tracker, lifted directly from the film, creates a specific kind of dread that most shooters of the period simply did not bother with. You hear the ping. You see the blip closing. And for a second you genuinely do not want to turn around.

What Alien Trilogy understood better than most of its contemporaries is atmosphere. The sound design does most of the heavy lifting — the ambient hum, the distant metallic scraping, the wet thud when something large hits the floor near you. The graphics were already showing their age by 1996 PC standards, but the level design compensated with tight spaces and deliberate pacing. It is not a technically impressive game. It is an effective one. There is a difference. The PC port also carried some of the rough edges from the console versions, and a few sections drag longer than they should, but nothing that kills the mood entirely.

Today it sits in an odd spot. It is not as mechanically sharp as Quake, which came out the same year and made most of its contemporaries look slow. But it does something Quake never tried — it makes you feel like you are in a specific, suffocating place, not just a room full of things to shoot. If you grew up watching Aliens on a taped VHS copy at a friend's house on a Saturday afternoon, this game still has pull. Fire it up in DOSBox late at night, turn the volume up, and try not to flinch at the first tracker ping. I will not judge you if you do.
