Hidden And Dangerous Deluxe

Hidden and Dangerous, here in its 1999 Deluxe edition, was the breakthrough from Czech studio Illusion Softworks, better known later for Mafia. It is a World War II squad-based tactical game in which you command a four-man team of British SAS commandos across missions of sabotage, rescue, and infiltration behind enemy lines. Crucially, it blends top-down tactical planning with a full third- and first-person view, letting you drop into the boots of any soldier and control the action directly.

That hybrid approach was ambitious for its time. You could pause to issue orders and position your men, then take direct control to line up a shot or storm a room. Missions favoured stealth and careful movement over run-and-gun bravado, with a realism that meant a couple of bullets could end a soldier permanently. Managing your squad's health and equipment between operations added a layer of consequence rarely seen in shooters of the era.

The Deluxe version bundled in extra content and refinements over the original release, along with fixes that smoothed out some of the game's notorious rough edges. It was undeniably buggy and demanding, but the atmosphere and the freedom it offered were genuinely gripping. As an early example of a Czech studio reaching for something more cinematic and systemic than its peers, it stands as an important and still atmospheric slice of tactical gaming history.
