About the game

Rincewind is about to die again. Or rather — Death is about to let him live, except it's not that simple, because Death herself has gone missing. Discworld 2: Mortality Bytes from 1996 starts exactly the way Terry Pratchett would expect — absolute chaos that looks like order.

Psygnosis built on the first game and this time followed in the footsteps of literature's most famous skeleton. Death has abandoned her post, which under normal circumstances would just be a philosophical problem, but on the Discworld it means nobody dies. Sounds tempting until you realize immortality in practice is more of a logistical nightmare. Rincewind — a wizard with a talent for survival and an absolute lack of courage — gets tasked with fixing the situation. Well, tasked with figuring out what's going on. Fixing things isn't really his style.

It's a classic point-and-click adventure in the LucasArts school of design, so you won't die, won't get stuck, and frustration comes purely from puzzles, not the system. The inventory bursts at the seams, item combinations are surreal even by Discworld standards, and puzzle logic sometimes follows its own orbit. Eric Idle voices Rincewind and does a solid job — that sarcastic weariness just never gets old. The animations are nice for 1996, the locations are lively, the dialogue is dense. If you enjoyed reading Pratchett, here you'll slip into the same rhythm.

What aged poorly? Inventory puzzles sometimes jump from "aha" to "seriously?". Some screens are crammed with interactive objects that exist purely for humor and have zero impact on solutions — which is both a strength and a weakness. Pacing drags in places. And let's be honest, without knowledge of the books, half the jokes will zip past your head like a wizard's hat in a thunderstorm.

Today the game appeals mainly to those who know the Discworld and have patience for old-school adventures — the kind where you think instead of clicking frantically. You can run it in your browser via DOSBox-based emulators without much fuss, and that hour and a half intro will fully show you whether you're on the same wavelength as Rincewind. If you are, you've got one of the better adventure afternoons of that decade ahead of you.
